Water Tight Vs Waterproof VS Water-Repellent

  • Water-resistant: able to resist the penetration of water to some degree but not entirely
  • Water-repellent: not easily penetrated by water, especially as a result of being treated for such a purpose with a surface coating

Our Definition As It Relates To Covers

Water Resistant Covers are the lowest level of protection from water. If a cover is labeled water resistant, that simply means that the cover itself is built in such a way that it is difficult for water to get inside. Or that it is coated with a spray that helps improve the covers water resistance.

Water-repellent Covers are a step up from water resistant covers. A cover which is labeled water repellent means that it has properties which allow it to repel water making it hydrophobic. These covers have a much better chance of standing up to water than your average cover.

Waterproof Covers are manufactured in such a way that they are impervious to water. The material itself is water repellent and the manufacturing process used makes the cover waterproof. This can include heat sealing as the manufacturing process as opposed to stitching the covers together. It can also include stitching with a special sealant along the seams.

You can see with the use of these three different terms there is a lot of confusion associated with their use. It’s no surprise that suppliers and customers often use them incorrectly. As a result, products labeled as water-resistant, water-repellent, or waterproof are often mislabeled or misrepresented in the market.

Waterproof Longevity

As with all products on the market, longevity comes into play when taking into consideration usage and the environment the covers are used in. Waterproof generally communicates the idea that a cover will be waterproof for the life of the cover and that it will never fail. Securing the Covers

Unlike inexpensive poly tarps, our custom equipment covers have many features that can be added for securing them. Covers can be secured onto the machinery with elastic, drawstrings, grommets, zippers and tie down straps. Using these features allows for a secure connection which will prevent the cover from blowing off of the machine. This will also help reduce the migration of rain, snow, dust and other elements from getting inside the cover.

Choosing the Right Material

With a wide variety of durable fabrics, materials are chosen to suit the equipment application based on the information that you provide to our estimating department. The material which is superior in bad weather more so than other products on the market is the 18oz Vinyl or also know as VCP / Vinyl Coated Polyester. It is a fabric scrim of polyester coated on both sides with virgin vinyl. The coating gives higher adhesion to the vinyl. Coated vinyl also is superior in cold weather conditions versus a laminate. They have a temperature range of -22°F before cold crack is possible and also stay flexible in those low temperatures. Laminate Vinyls do not have as low of a temperature range and are susceptible to cold crack. Lower cost laminates should not be compared or confused for coated vinyls. Coated Vinyls are designed for application that require high tear and tensile strength, high adhesion and water resistance.
